I have tried Windows 8.1 install disk, a repair disk made for that PC, The Ultimate Boot CD, nothing boots up. It will not boot up to the harddrive, DVD, USB Drive, nothing. I am wondering if Bitlocker or something has changed the permissions or something in the bios when I booted up to that laptop harddrive. The clone of the laptop shows files that are locked. I have removed the battery to try to reset the CMOS with no luck. I think the bios got messed up booting up to the laptop drive. If I press ESC or F10, or F11, fast enough, I get a black screen showing the memory installed and the Press ESC for Start Menu. I have tried all the F keys that are supposed to enter Setup, etc., nothing works.
After trying a few things Microsoft recommended, now it does nothing.Īt startup it freezes at the blue screen with HP logo and says Press ESC to enter Start Menu. First I was getting an error message that the harddrive was freeze locked.
Somehow the TouchSmart got trashed in the process. The owner was told anything on the hard drive could be lost.
Yikes.I took a HD from a laptop and used a USB adapter to boot it up with the HP to clone it because the laptop had to be sent in for repair.

Would formatting that partition and then using data recovery software (obviously saving recovered files to a different media) be a viable option? I know he doesn't have the money to use a professional data recovery service.ĮDIT: Disk Management now shows the system partition as RAW Healthy (Active Primary Partition). now it's a matter of trying to get those pictures. I think diagnostics are probably useless at this point. the main partition finally showed up in my Explorer after several minutes and wants me to format it. I right clicked it and selected Properties, and Disk Management wanted me to refresh. Disk Management (in Computer Management) shows the two partitions (220GB and 13GB), but the main system partition (220GB) just has that number in it. Either way, that's the only partition I can access.
I was wrong about the recovery partition being 250GB. I took the HDD out of the laptop and connected it as an external through USB to my desktop. it would eventually load the Recovery, but no input was recognized (you could select between the two options before it automatically selected Recovery, but couldn't do anything once IN Recovery). The original Vista error was the dreaded two option menu, one being Recovery.
